MANGOSTEEN - THE WHOLE FRUIT
Named for the French priest and explorer Laurentiers Garcin (1673-1751) the mangosteen is thought to have originated in Southeast Asia. It has been used for thousands of years in Chinese, Ayurvedic and folk medicine in Asia. As a result of the mangosteen fruit's exquisite flavor, it has been given the nickname of the "Queen of Fruits", and in the French Caribbean the "Food of the Gods". The mangosteen is the national fruit of Thailand, where it goes by the name mang khut. Elsewhere it is known as: mangostao, mangostanier, manggis, mangostan, or semetah.
The first scientific article on the mangosteen's medicinal properties was written hundreds of years ago. At the present time, researchers in countries around the world have produced numerous scientific papers on the mangosteens medicinal properties. The majority of these papers focus on the biologically active ingredients unique to mangosteen, the xanthones. Hundreds of other scientific studies validate the utility and properties of those nutrients (proanthocyanidins) and catechins) which the mangosteen shares with other well known botanicals such as green tea and grape seeds.
